AWS AI Services: A Simple Guide

Introduction:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere now. It helps apps understand text, recognize images, translate languages, and even talk like a human. Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers many AI tools that make it easy for companies to add “smart” features to their apps – without needing to build AI models from scratch.

In this blog, we will look at some popular AWS AI services in very simple words.

1. Amazon Rekognition

This service helps computers “see” and understand images and videos. It can find faces, detect objects, and even read text inside pictures.

What it can do:

  1. Detect and compare faces (face matching)
  2. Recognize objects and scenes, like a car, a dog, or a beach
  3. Read text written inside an image (like a sign or a label)
  4. Detect unsafe or inappropriate content in images and videos
  5. Track people as they move through a video
    Example use: A security camera app that finds unknown faces in a video. Retail stores also use it to count how many people walk past a shelf.

2. Amazon Comprehend

This service reads text and understands its meaning. It can find out if a sentence is positive or negative, and pick out important words like names of people or places.

What it can do:

  • Sentiment analysis (positive, negative, neutral, or mixed feelings)
  • Entity recognition (finds names, dates, places, and organisations in text)
  • Language detection (figures out what language the text is written in)
  • Key phrase extraction (pulls out the most important phrases from a document)
  • Medical text understanding, using a special version called Comprehend Medical
    Example use: Reading customer reviews and finding out if people are happy or unhappy. Companies also use it to scan support tickets and sort them by topic.

3. Amazon Transcribe

This service turns spoken words into written text. It “listens” to audio and writes down what it hears.

What it can do:

  • Converts audio and video files into text, in real time or after recording
  • Understands many languages and accents
  • Adds punctuation and speaker labels (like “Speaker 1”, “Speaker 2”)
  • Can be trained to understand special words, like medical or legal terms
  • Removes bad words automatically if needed
    Example use: Turning a recorded meeting into a text document. Call centers also use it to write down customer calls for review.

4. Amazon Polly

This service does the opposite of Transcribe – it turns written text into spoken audio, in a natural-sounding voice.

What it can do:

  • Offers many voices and languages to choose from
  • Supports “Neural” voices, which sound more human and natural
  • Lets you control speed, pitch, and pronunciation
  • Can highlight words as they are spoken, useful for subtitles
  • Works well for apps, audiobooks, and voice assistants
    Example use: Reading out articles for people who prefer listening over reading. It’s also used in IVR (phone) systems and language-learning apps.

5. Amazon Translate

This service translates text from one language to another.

What it can do:

  • Supports dozens of languages
  • Translates text instantly (real-time) or in large batches (many documents at once)
  • Keeps the tone and formatting close to the original text
  • Lets you add a custom dictionary, so brand names or special terms are translated the way you want
    Example use: Translating a website into many languages for global customers. News and media companies also use it to translate articles quickly.

6. Amazon Lex

This service helps you build chatbots. It understands what a user is typing or saying and gives a smart reply.

What it can do:

  • Understands natural language, so users can type or speak normally
  • Powers both text chatbots and voice assistants
  • Can connect to other systems, like a database or a payment system, to complete tasks
  • Handles multi-step conversations, like asking follow-up questions
  • Same technology used to build Amazon Alexa
    Example use: A chatbot that helps customers book a flight ticket, check an order status, or reset a password.

7. Amazon SageMaker

This is a bigger tool for people who want to build, train, and use their own AI models. It gives all the tools needed in one place.

What it can do:

  • Lets you prepare and clean data before training a model
  • Provides ready-made algorithms, so you don’t have to write everything from scratch
  • Trains models using powerful cloud computers
  • Deploys models so apps can use them (this is called “hosting”)
  • Includes tools like SageMaker Studio, a workspace for data scientists
    Example use: A company builds a custom AI model to predict sales for next month, or to detect fraud in transactions.

8. Amazon Bedrock

This service gives access to powerful AI models (called foundation models) from different companies, such as Anthropic, Meta, and Amazon itself. You can use these models to build chatbots, write content, or answer questions, without training your own model.

What it can do:

  • Gives access to multiple AI models through one simple interface
  • Lets you customise a model with your own data (this is called fine-tuning)
  • Supports “Agents”, which can complete multi-step tasks automatically
  • Keeps your data private, since it is not used to train the original models
  • Works well for building generative AI apps, like writing tools or Q&A systems
    Example use: Building an AI assistant for your website using ready-made models, or creating a tool that summarises long documents automatically.
